The Steinheim Basin, famous for a remarkable meteorite impact some 15 million years ago, is not only a magnet for scientists and curious minds worldwide, but also a thriving business centre.<\/p>\n

The effects of this astronomical event have left a fascinating crater structure, making the basin a significant point for geological and astronomical study.<\/p>\n

The impact of the meteorite<\/a>, estimated to be around 100-150 metres in diameter and travelling at a speed of around 20 kilometres per second (72,000 km\/h), caused immense devastation to large parts of the Swabian Jura<\/a>. Initially, a crater with a depth of around 200 metres was created, in the centre of which the rebounding rock formed a central mountain around 100 metres high. Steinheim lies in the centre of the circular crater, which is almost 3.8 km in size.<\/p>\n
