The impact of the meteorite, estimated to be around 100-150 metres in diameter and travelling at a speed of around 20 kilometres per second (72,000 km/h), caused immense devastation to large parts of the Swabian Jura. Initially, a crater with a depth of around 200 metres was created, in the centre of which the rebounding rock formed a central mountain around 100 metres high. Steinheim lies in the centre of the circular crater, which is almost 3.8 km in size.
